This Bojagi is made of Korean Sambe gauze which is a thin hemp, translucent fabric with an open weave.
Sambe is a traditional fabric in Korea. Historically, it is the oldest and widely used fabric in the nation.
Sambe is grown on hemp, it is them peeled, cut thinly and made into thread. After being processed several times, it is woven on a loom.
When the Hemp Management Act was enforced in 1976, hemp cultivation and production were restricted nationwide. Since then, as factory-made fabrics became popular, Sambe production decreased sharply.
Today, hemp is being used more for its breathability, it is a fabric used to make summer clothes, beddings and tableware for special occasions.
